Dr. Lisa Barr is not your typical physician, physiatrist, teacher, mentor, healer or author.

Dr. Barr aims to help create transformational experiences for her patients. Part of her strategy is to teach people how to take responsibility for their own health, promoting a more collaborative approach to care. Her desire is to arm her clients with ’understanding their why’: why they have pain, and how to get to its source so that it is not necessary to treat pain as a symptom. Identifying hidden triggers of stress and pain is essential to overcoming it.

A Coastal Virginia native, Dr. Barr is a seasoned physician with a passion for treating people with musculoskeletal conditions that cause pain and dysfunction. She is board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Since completing her training over 30 years ago she founded APM Spine and Sports Physicians, an interdisciplinary practice devoted to treating pain. Currently, she focuses her energy on developing innovative methods that inform and guide people to optimal recovery, assisting them to achieve their best functional outcome.

By embracing both the newest technologies and the ‘fine art of healing’ she is recognized as a driving force of change in the medical field both locally and nationally. Over the last 20 years, she focused much of her energy on biologic healing modalities including PRP and stem cells, which facilitate the body to heal itself. She was one of the first physiatrists to integrate regenerative medicine into her unique medical model which includes: PRP, stem cells, traditional interventional pain management, osteopathic manipulation, energy work, use of diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound, mind-body therapies, and integrative medicine.

She draws on her vast network of colleagues, across different specialties and alternative healing modalities, for assistance in helping her patients achieve optimal health and function. She has consistently been honored by her peers as a “Top Doc.” She was also selected as one of 2012’s Top Business Women of the Year in her area.

Dr. Barr has treated over 200,000 patients in her 40+ year career. Some of them affectionately refer to her as the “pain magician”. Her patients come from every walk of life: young athletes, adoring grandparents, professional athletes, boardroom execs, military

personnel, first responders, teachers, and everyone in between. No matter your situation, circumstance, or station in life, she not only has seen your pain but knows how to treat it. Moreover, she has a profound understanding of how to activate the most powerful weapon to fight your pain: YOU!

Many people don’t think they have any control over their pain, but Dr. Barr is a compassionate healer and guide who teaches you techniques to kick your pain habits. The gratification in sending someone out of her office pain free, after making small changes, is what motivates her every day.

Her inspiration to write “Outsmart Your Pain! A Patient’s Guide to Overcoming Pain and Transforming Your Life” was to help more people gain the same insights and lessons that she shares with her patients. Her hope is to not only change the way patients see their pain, but how others in the medical community see it as well.
